In February 2020, we released a report on wind power projects in Vietnam. In the previous article, as of February 2020, there are about 13GW of wind power projects in various stages of development in Vietnam. Among them, the capacity of offshore wind power is about 9.4GW and onshore wind power is 3.6GW.

 

Then, in June 2021, there were a total of at least 71GW of wind power projects in different stages of development in Vietnam, which was more than five times the capacity in February last year.

 

Among them, the capacity of offshore wind power is about 65.7GW, and onshore wind power is about 5.5GW. It can be seen that in the past year or so, COVID-19 has not stopped investors from enthusiasm for wind power investment in Vietnam.

 

In the past year or so, the cumulative installed capacity of onshore wind power in Vietnam has increased from 271MW to 789MW. However, the capacity of offshore wind power in operation has remained at 99MW. Additionally, onshore wind power and offshore wind power projects under construction have increased by about 1.2GW and 0.6GW, respectively.

 

It is worth mentioning that if we count the wind power projects planned by the government in June 2020, there are about 10 GW of onshore wind power projects in Vietnam's planning as of June 2021, an increase of 7.3 GW compared to February last year. Astonishingly, offshore wind power projects in the pipeline have increased significantly from 8.9GW in February last year to 64.7GW in June this year.

 

It is not difficult to see that although the current installed capacity of offshore wind power in Vietnam is much lower than that of onshore wind power, offshore wind power will be the main development direction of Vietnam in the long run.
